‘Resident Evil’ Spin-off ‘Umbrella Corps’ Announced by Capcom

Wow, there are a ton of pissed of Resident Evil fans right now! Umbrella Corps was announced this week at the Tokyo Game Show. The game is a Resident Evil spin-off, taking place in the RE universe.

I came across this article, watched the trailer, and then headed over to YouTube to gauge the reactions from the fans. Not good. Currently, the scale is tipping in favor of the dislikes. Honestly, I think the game looks great, but I hear what the fans are saying. Most concerns are that Capcom is straying too far from the Resident Evil that we all know and love. It’s not Call of Duty or Gears of War.

Let’s take a look:

However, the fans need to realize a couple of key points here. One, the game is set in the RE universe. It’s not a major RE title, only a spin-off. Second, there’s a wide demographic of gamers that Capcom is trying to appeal to. On one end of the spectrum, the old school die hard fans that were old enough to play the original game when it came out (1996) and only want to see haunted mansions and slow paced zombies. On the other end, the new age of gamers who enjoy extremely face paced shooters. Capcom has to try to appeal to everyone, fans old and new.

Please understand that Capcom isn’t personally trying to piss in your Cheerios. As a business, they want to make games that they think will sell. Sometimes they hit it out of the park and sometimes they don’t. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Resident Evil. 20 years! I’m sure they are trying to spice things up to keep people interested. That’s understandable, right?
